Unfortunately all these methods are either ineffective or can damage the stone and decrease its long-term legibility. Today's new headstone will be tomorrow's historic grave marker, and history can disappear.
While these methods remain popular, all cause irreversible damage, and often fail to remove the roots of the mosses and lichens, which will soon regrow.
First we carefully assess the condition of the stone and what the exact causes are. From there we use a variety of best practices, only intervening where necessary. Typically we use D/2 Biological Solution applied with a hand pump sprayer, then gently brush with soft bristles and rinse with clean water.

All our work and recommendations are according to the principle of Preventative Conservation. We take action right now, only where required, to promote the long-term preservation of cultural property. Monuments start off belonging to one person or family, but they also belong to history, and can be meaningful for many generations.
Standard cemetery lawn care typically does not include individual care of the plot and lawnmowers and other equipment can do a lot of damage to monuments. Our completely personalized service will keep the burial plot beautiful year-round and for years to come.
Any sort of abrasion will certainly make the inscription less legible over time and can cause or worsen other damage as well. The best way to read an old inscription is to have the stone cleaned and then take a series of digital photos using a full-length mirror or photography reflector to direct light at various angles.
Besides cleaning, there are no non-damaging ways to increase legibility. Even re-inscription is a type of damage. Once the stone is worn away it is gone forever. This is why preventative conservation is so valuable.
Native species are hardy, adapted to the local climate and require less care. They also benefit local wildlife, including pollinators. Careful planting around the monument helps naturally preserve it from being overgrown and keeps it at a safe distance from mowers and trimmers.
